THE RANCOCAS CREEK ASSOCIATION
A Residents' Association With a Focus on Environmental Quality
The Rancocas Creek Association (RCA) is an organization with a long history.
It was originally a "campers' association" formed by families from
Camden, Philadelphia and other surrounding towns summering along the Creek
between Smithville and Mt. Holly in the 1930's. Although the Creek and the
entire region have undergone many changes since then, the RCA has remained
a permanent fixture in the area, working to improve the environment for both
the local residents and all who wish to enjoy the Rancocas Creek's natural
beauty.
What We Do
Creek Clean-up: RCA members remove fallen trees that obstruct the waterway
and collect trash. We take out all sorts of debris like tires and even appliances!
Storm Water Watch: Our members work with Burlington County Emergency
Management to develop and implement an inter-township agreement and procedures
to manage dams during high water.
Cooperation with Emergency Services: The RCA provides area maps to
local fire departments and emergency response offices and clears access for
fire and emergency vehicles.
Derelict Structures: We have identified a number of abandoned structures
along the Creek in Eastampton Township and worked with the township to have
them removed.
Smithville Canal: Formerly a canal to control flooding at Smithville
Lake, it has become a stagnant, mosquito-breeding area which is both an eyesore
and a health hazard. We are working with the Mosquito Commission and Eastampton
Township to promote clearing and restoration of the Canal.
Water Quality: We collaborate with State and local agencies and private
organizations to monitor and maintain water quality and to identify sources
of pollution and siltation.
Promoting Recreation: The RCA assists Burlington County in coordinating
events like the Annual Fall Float and Rancocas Regatta, which showcase the
Rancocas Creek as a recreational resource.
We encourage friends and neighbors, and everyone who is interested in the
health and beauty of the Rancocas Creek, to join us. Annual dues per household
are only $20.00. Members receive a monthly newsletter, an RCA T -shirt, a
free end-of-year breakfast, and a vote! We meet eight times a year from March
to October, the third Sunday of the month.
